"History will have to record that the greatest tragedy of this period of social transition was not the strident clamor of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it. He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it."
- Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. -
The Justice for Herman Whitfield III Campaign began in May 2022 - a few weeks after the horrific extrajudicial police killing of Herman Whitfield III on April 25, 2022 - to support the Whitfield family and mobilize the community to demand accountability, justice, and community-led change for Herman III and the many other victims of police brutality in Indiana.
Herman Whitfield III's extended family and a small group of friends and concerned community members joined together to support his immediate family, inform the community about Herman III's violent death at the hands of six IMPD officers, and demand accountability and justice for Herman III and the community as a whole. In August 2022, the Campaign launched its website and, in October 2022, the Campaign held a Community Memorial to invite the community to support the Whitfield family and join efforts for justice for Herman Whitfield III.
The Justice for Herman Whitfield III Campaign continues to grow and now consists of family, friends and associates who knew and dearly miss Herman III, concerned community members, activists, grassroots organizers, and faith organizations from Indianapolis, around Indiana, and throughout the country.*
Campaign volunteers are united in spirit and recognize the enormous importance of this human rights work for Herman Whitfield III, his family, Indiana, the country, and the world.
The Justice for Herman Whitfield III Campaign is a 100% community-based effort and has the support of the Whitfield family. Join Us.
*From January 2023 to March 2023, the Justice for Herman Whitfield III Campaign accepted support from the Indy Liberation Center and its member organizations (including the Party for Socialism and Liberation of Indianapolis and ANSWER Indiana). On April 6, 2023, the Justice for Herman Whitfield III Campaign ended this brief association with these organizations.
**While the Whitfield family invited some members of the Black Church Coalition to attend one of the Campaign's first events - this Campaign has never received support from or organized with the Black Church Coalition or Faith in Indiana.
